Stopping Spam on your Blog

What works to stop spam comments to your blog. I've had blogs up for several years.  Spam has always been a problem.  Wordpress sends me an email when someone posts and it asks me if I want to approve or delete the comment.  Usually it's clear that a spammer has posted the comment because you can see the drugstore ad or car loan insurance proudly posted to your comment list. 

Spammers get a page rank boost from the link and a low probability that someone will actually click through and buy something.

I was getting several a day and it was a pain to login and delete them.  Several would come in all at once from different ips so it was probably a net of slave computers under the control of some spammer which sends out the blog comments.

I tried the captca image module but it is very poor as a spam catcher.  The spammers have software that can read the images almost as well as a human.  So that did not work.

I added the Challenge plugin to my Wordpress blog and it allows you to ask a math or logical question and reject the post if the answer is not what you expect.  I tried everything with this one, thinking the software had no ability to figure out a logical question like "Add  (+3) and (-3) plus 4 plus 6 and give me the sum".  I assume that the spammers use humans to figure out the logical question and then the bots go to work once the human figures out the answer.  They were not slowed down in any visible way by all my changing questions.  Even ones that asked pure word problems such as "If I add four dogs to an empty pen, and then add two horses, how many cats are in the pen?"
