Promotion of your site

Promotion of your site is a complex thing.

The key is traffic. With it you may succeed, without it, you fail.

There are things you can do on site. Build pages that Google likes so that the content has value to the visitors. On site stuff is under your control.

Create a site map and upload it to Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Use good keywords in your page titles, headers and content. A good keyword is one that relates well to the content or purpose of your site. Put those keywords in prominent locations like title and headers.

There is less you can do off site, but it is more important. You need links from important sites to your site. And the links need to be full of keywords that relate to your site. In other words, don't ask for a visible link to www.yoursite.com bur rather ask for a link with appropriate keywords in it such as: "dog nutrition product reviews" if your site sells dog food. The keywords in the link will make it more important than just the name of your site used as a link.

You need as many links from other sites to your site as you can get. Ask for links, trade links for links, buy links, write articles with links back to your site, submit videos to YouTube that link back to your site, post on forums with a signature that links back to your site, comment on blogs with a link to your site in the post message. Don't put your link on FFA sites (free for all ) where anyone can post a link. Or where the link page is just a bunch of links. Check the Google page rank of the link page. If it is high then that is a valuable link to your site.

You can buy traffic. Google Adwords is the simpliest way to buy clicks, but it can eat money if you don't turn those clicks into money when they get to your site.
You can buy traffic in large quantity but you need to know the traffic is targeted. That is, you need to know that the people have an interest in what you are selling. If you buy untargeted traffic, the people spend two seconds on your page and then leave. In that case it does not matter how much traffic you get, it is all worthless.

So you need targeted traffic. Adwords allows you to put the ads on pages where people have actually searched for a particular thing. If you are selling that thing, then they may be very ready to buy. A big part of using Adwords is the creation of lists of keywords that Google will use to display the ad. If you pick the right keywords, then Google will display the ad to the right people and some of them will come to your site. Then you have to sell the product.
